Waco ISD hosted the first annual Waco ISD Unified Basketball Game on March 4th at the University High School gym.  Waco ISD has two high schools and these rivalry games are always a lot of fun.  On the University side, SOTX athletes played alongside UHS JROTC cadets, and Waco Hi athletes played with students who have committed to spending a portion of their school day mentoring students in the Functional Academic classrooms.  Members of the UHS choir sang back up as one of our SOTX athletes sang the National Anthem.  120 members of the UHS band were out in full force and full uniform to support both teams.  UHS cheerleaders and dance teams made run-through and support signs for the event, as well as cheering for both teams.  They also led the half time dance party in which everyone was encouraged to come out on to the gym floor and do the Wobble and Cupid Shuffle, accompanied by the WHS dance team.  UHS JROTC not only had Unified Partners playing, but also had a large cheering section.  The head coaches and principals from both schools served as officials for the game.  The entire Special Education Administrative staff was in attendance assisting in some capacity.  Also present and supporting the athletes were the WISD Superintendent and Athletic Director.  Waco ISD's Fine Arts director was the announcer for the game, and school nurses from both high schools served as medical staff.  The game was shot by Waco ISD TV and will be aired once editing is finished.  What a great event, this game was the very definition of a Unified School!!!  Looking forward to the Unified Flag Football Game later this Spring.
