If it's July, It Must Be the Tip A Cop at Texas Roadhouse

In a lead-up to our annual statewide Tip a Cop at Texas Roadhouse, our friends at the Corpus Christi Police Department and the Corpus Christi Fire Department and several local news organizations banded together for their 4th annual Texas Roadhouse Rib Eating Contest and Tip a Cop/Tip a Firefighter at the end of June. And, for the 2nd year in a row, (3 out of 4 events) representatives of the Corpus Christi Fire Department demolished the competition and took home the trophy! They also raised $2,000 in donations from the Tip a Cop. Watch this fun video about the Rib Eating Contest.

That event got us thinking about the statewide July 27 Tip a Cop at Texas Roadhouse event. Our goal this year is a whopping $200,000, so we're going to need to be in as many Texas Roadhouses as possible. The Laredo Texas Roadhouse Tip a Cop will be on July 20 and the College Station Texas Roadhouse will host Tip a Cops from July 24-27. For more information about how to sign up anywhere in the state, please contact Doug Ray (dray@sotx.org), Anna Twitty (atwitty@sotx.org) or Alejandra Lima (alima@sotx.org).

Get Well Soon

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to LETR member and San Antonio Police Department Officer Julio Cavazos, who was injured in an attack by two armed suspects on June 30. Officer Cavazos' daughter turned six years old shortly after the attack, and we dropped off a gift for her at the Police Department. We look forward to seeing Officer Cavazos back at our events. Officer Cavazos' partner, Officer Miguel Moreno, was also shot and died from his injuries. Our thoughts are with the Department and Officer Moreno's family.

A Note from the SOTX Board of Directors:

After 22 years as President and CEO of Special Olympics Texas, Margaret Larsen's last day as President and CEO of Special Olympics Texas was June 19, 2017. The Special Olympics Texas Board of Directors appreciates Mrs. Larsen's many contributions to improving the lives of people with intellectual disabilities, both here in Texas and around the world. Under her leadership, Special Olympics Texas came to be one of the most respected Programs in the Special Olympics movement. Suzanne Anderson, SOTX Senior Vice President of Field Services, has been named the interim CEO until a permanent CEO is named. The SOTX Board of Directors will commence a CEO search when ready. Rest assured that our staff will continue to provide the kind of quality programming and services the athletes of Special Olympics Texas deserve.

Fire Truck Pulls

Congratulations to our friends in Duncanville for their super-successful Duncanville Fire Truck Pull. The Duncanville Police Department and the Duncanville Fire Department raised more than $25,000 in their May pull. Thank you and way to go! See the list of upcoming Fire Truck Pulls to find one near you.

Summer Games 2017

Another Summer Games is in the books, and we thank everyone who made the trip to Arlington to make our athletes feel special. More than 350 officers from across the state joined us for the annual Torch Run into Maverick Stadium and then returned Friday evening for the Opening Ceremony.

BIG CONGRATS are in order for Dallas Police Department's Deborah Joseph for being presented with only the second-ever Joe Avezzano Unsung Hero Award at the LETR BBQ the night before the Torch Run. Deborah is in great company -- the first winner was our own SOTX staffer Doug Ray. This award to Deborah was a well-deserved honor for someone who does so much for our Torch Run program and especially for our athletes! Congratulations, Deborah!

And, if you missed the Opening Ceremony, you really missed it. The night's entertainment was provided by the Dallas Police Department Dancers. Check out the video! We're not sure how we're going to top it next year!

Grab Your Calendar & Save the Date

Several events are coming up in the next few months where we'll need your help:

  • Cops on Top at Dunkin' Donuts (September 23, statewide)
  • Tip a Cop at Red Robin in October (October 21, in areas 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 22)

Thank you, Elvis

Back in May, Texas Rangers SS Elvis Andrus presented SOTX with a $5,000 donation to help support the 2017 Summer Games in Arlington. Elvis ran the Torch around the baseball stadium with our athletes and officers before the check presentation. We are grateful for his generosity and love for our athletes and the Law Enforcement Torch Run!

Irving Penny Drive

Check out this awesome video about the Irving Police Department Penny Drive for Special Olympics Texas. They're in their fourth year, and it looks like they have a blast! Let us know if you want to get more information about how your department or school can participate.

Cowboy Cops Rodeo

The Grand Prairie Cowboy Cops Rodeo is back for an exciting second year at the Will Rogers Coliseum in Fort Worth on September 9 and 10. If you know a cop who's also a cowboy or cowgirl, tell them about the Cowboy Cop Rodeo, which raises funds to support Special Olympics Texas athletes! You can find lots more info here.

Donation During Vehicle Registration

Reminder: You can donate to Special Olympics Texas when you register your car, truck, boat or motorcycle -- online, on the paper registration form or at the DMV window. Every bit, any amount, helps us provide quality athletic competitions and other programs to more than 58,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities right here in Texas. So, when your registration sticker tells you it's time to renew, remember to help Special Olympics Texas athletes! www.sotx.org/giveus5
